UNGA Side-Event - Internet Connectivity for All: Universal Access for Sustainable Development (hosted by ITU & others)

  • CR 8, UNHQ New York (map)

Internet has become part of our everyday life. As the world’s primary means of enabling learning, delivering knowledge, providing health care, enhancing agriculture, saving the environment, creating jobs, and understanding each other, the Internet is moving from commercial service to public utility.

Connectivity is indeed essential in our global society in the most diverse activities. In the case of education it is certainly key. Achieving universal, affordable internet access is a key social and economic priority for countries around the world. The United Nations agreed to work toward achieving this target by 2020 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Convened by Italy and Mexico, this high-level event will provide an opportunity to foster discussion among experts, UN Agencies and Member States on the concrete ways to accelerate efforts in order to improve access to internet connectivity and ensure integrated and sustainable development.
