Data Privacy Specialist

Global Pulse is an innovation initiative in the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General. Our focus is harnessing new digital data to help the public sector understand more expediently how communities are coping with the impacts of global crises. To this end, Global Pulse is developing a 21st Century approach to impact monitoring, building social software for evidence-based decision making, and establishing a network of “Pulse Labs” to mainstream the use of real-time data analysis into development policy. 

Functional Responsibilities

Provide support  to senior management on digital privacy policy, ethics, and current regulations and trends on data privacy, perform relevant research and develop guidance notes.

  • Act as focal point for digital data privacy matters across the Pulse Lab network in New York, Kampala, and Jakarta

  • Provide additional advice on strategy around licensing and intellectual property matters related to current and potential Global Pulse projects

  • Promote compliance with the UN’s privacy and data security principles and procedures.

  • Implement  strategies for convening advisory groups of international privacy experts and working groups of UN agencies to provide policy guidance to the wider UN system

  • Build and facilitate a network of privacy experts to promote responsible use of data for SDGs

  • Facilitate workshops and conferences with privacy experts, UN agencies, and academia

  • Support Global Pulse’s interactions with the Office of Legal Affairs through research, analysis and preliminary drafts of contracts, including complex digital data and technology sharing agreements

  • Oversee  and coordinate the implementation of risk management, ethics and compliance frameworks for data privacy across the Pulse Lab network

  • Oversee the internal privacy audit processes and periodically revise them in accordance to changes in regulatory landscape or organizational policy.

  • Liaise with UN agencies, regulatory / accrediting bodies and other related organizations on matters of privacy law, digital privacy and digital ethics

  • Represent Global Pulse in events and working groups related to digital privacy, ethics and data security.

  • Conduct capacity building exercises and trainings on digital privacy and ethics across the UN, including privacy and partnership training guidelines.
