Innovating Environmental Policy Monitoring leveraging Computer Vision (AI) in Guatemala

UNDP Accelerator Labs and SDG AI Lab developed a state-of-the-art computer vision (CV) model for cost-effective detection of illegal dumpsites. The model has shown promising results and generalization capabilities. Current work includes the incorporation of local communities and local authorities for continuous model refinement and advancing towards open architectures (e.g. digital public goods). This initiative aligns with Guatemalan national strategic goals and contributes to environmental protection efforts by offering a scalable method for other geographical regions facing similar challenges.
